Blueberries gone wild

Sunday, August 30, 2009

It’s the tail end of blueberry season here in Quebec.
These little navy pearls are from Lac St-Jean and have a much more intense flavour than their bloated, watery, cultivated brethren. Every year I freeze enough to last us through winter since they’re perfect for adding to oatmeal or pancakes. I snapped up a boat-sized basket [...]

Summer’s last gasp: sprinklers, late-strawberry jam & Spongebob erasers

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

The other day I spent a few blissful hours running through a sprinkler with my niece on her 7th birthday.
And yet, just beneath the surface of my thoughts, I could feel that familiar end-of-summer dread seeping in. The few remaining dog days are beginning to fly by at break-neck speed. I’m avoiding TV because I [...]

Quel est le dill-io?

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Ever find yourself sitting in front of the computer at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, penning a passionate post on Chowhound about pickle brine vinegar-water ratios and the pros and cons of the slow-pasteurization method in relation to crunch preservation? Blame it on my first batch of pickles, which tasted like a lethal vinegar [...]

That 70’s jam

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

When visiting secondhand bookshops I now head straight to the cookbook section in search of vintage canning and preserving books. Here’s one I unearthed recently: The Complete Book of Preserving by Marye Cameron-Smith, from 1976.
Dig the book’s 70’s-tastic country kitchen look.

Like the kitchens from that era, food photography was steeped in shades of rust, avocado, [...]

Tears of nectar

Friday, August 14, 2009

My friend A. told me yesterday that the way to tell if a fig is ripe, according to French writer Colette, is if when you look at its bottom you see a single tear of nectar oozing out. Hmmm. I just kinda sniffed and gave a gentle squeeze this time around, but in future I’ll [...]

Kind of blue

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

I’ve beenĀ  exploring jam ninja Linda Amendt’s Blue Ribbon Preserves. As she tells it in the back of the book, Linda won 618 awards over 11 years of competition, including 315 first-place ribbons, before retiring from competition in 2000. Yowzah. I picture her as the reigning Iron Chef of preserves, furrowed, sweaty brow hovering over [...]

Canning Zeitgeist

Sunday, August 9, 2009

It’s true. Home canning is everywhere. Like gardening and raising chickens, it’s gone urban, attained trend status. Manhattanites are penning canning cookbooks aimed at apartment dwellers while some serious canning nerds are blogging all about it. Over the past year it’s gone from a low rumble to a thunderous clang. Suddenly the C word’s [...]

Tricked out pickles (trickles?)

Friday, August 7, 2009

Woah. The house smells like vinegar. Like aromatic, spiced, boiled brine to be precise. Made pickles for the first time today. Spent what seemed like a long time standing over that simmering pot of brine (actually only about 15 minutes), getting brine steam in my eyes. But it was all worth it. I gots pickles!!! [...]

La vitta confettura

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

I’m back from a week-long work trip to Italy where I stayed one night at this fairytale place called Castello Vicarello in Maremma, Tuscany (a region not yet overrun by turisti within a region that is known for being very much so).

Turns out Aurora, the owner, makes her own jams – and everything else – [...]
